Maybe I'm experiencing a TOS compatibility issue when trying to play Stardust or Obsession.   Both games are favourites of mine from way back and take advantage of the additional STE capabilities.  ;D   I'm using a STE with TOS 2.06, 4MB of ram and petari's 4GB disk image.  The adapted version of Stardust bombs out when loading while the background music is missing from Obsession.  ???

I've assumed that TOS 2.06 would be okay but would be interested to know other peoples experience or if there are TOS compatibly issue.

Maybe you could fit dual TOS chips (1.62 and 2.06) into your STE?  I've already done this to one of my three STE machines, to give it better compatibility with games and applications.  It cost about £15 I think earlier this year from techie_alison on this forum and others.

My STE has 4mb also, petari disk disk boot, but 1.62 TOS,i believe is one of TOS with very good compatibility  between old-new games!
I think months ago we vote to 1.4 TOS as better than all..

TOS 2.06 is problem in very rare cases by my adaptations. It is because GOS (files D15R... ) replaces it with TOS 1.04 core, even on STE and Falcon. And I test always with 2.06 .

Stardust works not if there is IDE hard disk adapter in STE - it is because of games stoopid Falcon detection - if there is IDE, it thinks that it's Falcon !
I will look Obsession, don't remember about it now ...

That 1MB is not your RAM amount, but RAM what is reserved for game (and TOS) self during play. (1MB total would result in message as adapt. needs 2MB). It is actually special area what can be saved as gamestate (snapshot) for later continuing gameplay. And 1MB is enough for that. More RAM reserved would result in longer statesave files.

The reason for problems by you is very likely too much RAM occupied by hard disk driver. Read here how to decrease it:

Game looking for file named GAME.PRG when retire (strange) ... But I renamed (and packed) it ...
Anyway I added one short file with that name, so now retire is OK. But better that you exit with Gamex key - it is faster and will restore Desktop better. Retire has only sense if want to save your score of abored game.

Considering NVDI :  general rule is: clean TOS. So NVDI may cause problems - especially by Civilisation on Falcon where some XBIOS patch is present, what may go in conflict with NVDI.

Well - what is good for gaming is not good for NVDI. I consider Hddriver as not good driver for gaming - it is complicated for setting, freezes when Timer C is changed (what is often by games), uses too much RAM etc.
For Falcon and gaming best is to have CF card + IDE-CF adapter, with my driver. Then may very easy to transfer files with PC, and no driver config problems, and all works faster.
