Having an issue with Astro 2000 under Hatari.  It runs good with Steem.

Under Hatari, the game hangs with a black screen and the terminal reports:

WARN : Bus Error reading at address $d0, PC=$3f552 addr_e3=3f552 op_e3=4cdf

Unfortunately I can't get to the debugger since the emulator is totally locked up by that point.

Were you able to test with Hatari on your end?

Also, with Computer Scrabble I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but when I start the game (Steem/Hatari US/UK TOS 4MB) and enter at least 2 names as the game won't be started otherwise then the strangest thing happens.  The game goes on auto-pilot and the two names I entered play against each other under computer control.  I never get a chance to control either player.  Not sure if this is some copy-protection or something else.

Well, I would call that problem with Hatari problem of Hatari. I had similar Hatari crashes plenty of times. With diverse games. Not sure that me testing it with Hatari will help in finding the cause. What can help is to look what is at that location with Steem Debugger - and write about it to Hatari team.

I had same thing with Computer Scrabble. After some tries I found this: when start to play immediately then computer do not take over control. Would be good to find instructions for game ...

Oh sure, I agree it should be a Hatari problem.  I may have an idea of how to find out where it locks Hatari so I can talk to the Hatari team.  It is good for Hatari to fix these game issues as they come up.  Well hopefully it can be done.  ;D

Jeff:  I looked it in Steem Debugger:

        rts                                              ; 03F552: 4E75

   bclr #$0,(a0)                                    ; 03F55C: 0890 0000
   beq.s +8 {$03F56A}                               ; 03F560: 6708

   trap #1                                          ; 03F576: 4E41
   addq.l #6,a7                                     ; 03F578: 5C8F
   lea +$18(pc),a4 {$03F594}                        ; 03F57A: 49FA 0018

   rts                                              ; 03F580: 4E75

This is probably lower than how you ran it in Hatari (depends from TOS version under what run). Basepage is at $AA52 (address is at $5622 in TOS 1.04 in RAM). So, you can see if there is some start pos. diff.
Probably it is movem.l ... instruction at  $03F56A (code $4CDF) .  In Steem works fine, as well with real HW .

Return of Medusa translation will wait couple weeks.

Thanks, Peter, I will check this out.

Btw, for Computer Scrabble, there is a notes.txt from Klaz's ULS release.

GAMEPLAY
--------
Select "new game" from the menu.
Enter a name and when asked for the level of play, enter 0 for a
human player or 1 - 8 for a computer controlled opponent.
Up to 4 players (human and/or computer) are allowed.

The game will accept *any* word you enter, it will just ask you
whether you're sure about your word when it can't find the word in
its dictionary. So play fair. ;-)

To use one of the blank wildcard tiles hold SHIFT pressed while
entering the letter the blank tile should represent.

So I entered level 0 for player 1 and then can play the game as a human :).

Deluxe Nostram (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/deluxnos.html)
Dweabys Quest (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/dweabys.html) - less known, low budget EPYX game .
Mouth Trap (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/mouthtrp.html) - many levels.
Rune (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/rune.html) - barely known 3D adv.
Dangerous Mission (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/dangmiss.html) - monochrome game with nice intro.
Sam in Monsters Land (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/saminmol.html) - STE only game with plenty of levels (200 ?) . And it uses STE new features well.

I was on doing Back to the Future 2  and  Drivin' Force . But both suffer from slow code. In BTTF3 first part was playable well, but too repetitive. Then second part, duck shooting was just unplayable because big joystick lag, what makes accurate shooting impossible. I went thru with some cheat, and part 3 seemed not good too, so aborted it.  Drivin' Force has frame rate of some 5 fps (while Amiga v. is advertised with some 50 fps). Too choppy for good play experience, despite good graphic.

Thanks Peter, some good releases there.  I never knew about Rune.  Looks really good, but being in French I have no idea what is going on  :).

Deluxe Nostram looks like they ripped the graphics from GODS, but then the flip-scrolling.... ;D

Btw, the file archive for Mouth Trap has a game folder inside the game folder.  Is that how you intended it?

P.S.  I still think Drivin' Force would be a good release even with the low framerate.  Might be playable on a MSTE at 16Mhz or with an Adspeed accelerator.
Title: Re: New game adaptations
Post by: Petari on 23-12-2022, 14:11:16
I always make ZIPs with folder in ZIP - so is easier to unpack - no need to type folder name. Others are same. Only that I added outside folder for Atari hard disks one jpg picture (LFN filename). Because Mouth Trap was in 4 game collection (Games Galore by Mandarin SW), and that pic is advert for it. But did not find other 3 so good.

Yep, Drivin' Force is worth of doing it. If nothing else, on TT will be fast enough :-)

Nice, fun little game.  Appears to have decent update on Steem and Hatari with 8Mhz.  Didn't have any issues with the speed.  The game does seems a little unpolished in the graphics area, but reminds me a lot of the game Power Drift in regards to what they were trying to do there.  I am having more fun with it using the joystick mode.  Mouse mode was a little unforgiving.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays and Joyous New Year to you and yours and to all Atarians!  ;D

Main hd image was not updated in last month. And it will wait some time yet. Lot of other things to do.
Spent today hours with preparing box scan pictures, YT videos for some updated adaptations - Jeffrey Young did again a batch of them. So, that's good moment to add missing pictures, to game pages and launchers too.
I think that tomorrow will post here links, some notices ..

Thanks Peter, nice to see all the new releases.

A couple of notes about the HAGA conversions I did:

1) The normal in-game save/load functions for Cadaver, Corporation and Knightmare now work from hard drive.  Also for Cadaver the Payoff.

2) Cisco Heat now works with NTSC machines.  As a result, Peter was able to make Chase HQ 2 work on NTSC machines also, so if that interests you, please re-download the archive for that game.

Really happy to see Captive converted to HAGA and with the notorius shop-key bug fixed! Great work!

Curse of Azriel (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/curseazr.html) - Adv. written in STOS. Over 1 MB.
Kenny Dalglish Soccer Manager (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/kendalsm.html) - Nice graphic.
Deathstar (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/deatstar.html) - STOS vertical scr. shooter.
Magic Stones (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/mstones.html) - Tetris, Bitris, Columns. All it with GEM, and works in all resolutions. Well, medium res. not recommended. And needed little correction for low res. At least keyboard response is fast, so well playable (can not say it for all Tetris clones).
Vie et Mort des Dinosaures (https://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/viemdino.html) - In French.
Beside hard disk run some TOS compatibility problems are solved too.
Title: Re: New game adaptations
Post by: Petari on 12-02-2023, 10:53:42
I need to write here some details about all this for hard disk run adapting, because obviously most of people has no idea what all it is, what is needed to achieve it. And that it offers much more than old (type) floppy 'cracks' do.

Idea of transferring Atari ST games from floppy(es) to hard disk is old as usage of hard disks with them. And some have such option 'built in' - install to hard disk. But copy protections can not be installed/copied to hard disk. So, it was needed to have game floppy in drive A when start game from hard disk, to pass copy protection - of course if there was such. In case of 'manual protection' it was no need for floppy, of course.
But things are that those old hard disk installs are in most cases not good for modern(er) hard disk usage.
Installer code is not flexible, and often fails with newer media with larger capacity.

First idea for transferring it to hard disk is of course: let's copy all files, DIRs to some DIR on hard disk.
Well, in case that there are at all regular files on floppy(es). And no copy protection.
And even if no copy protection, it fails in most of cases. The reasons: game's code uses not relative file access. Instead something like:  GAMFILE.DAT  there is  A:/GAMFILE.DAT  or /GAMFILE.DAT . This is simple case, and can be corrected with hex editor in many cases.  Worse is when game code has some disk tests, code what works good only with floppies (I saw really a lot of strange solutions, mostly as result of low experience and knowledge with disks) . That needs more complicated corrections.
Then, problems with games on multiple floppies. Yeah, that should be like: copy all it in one DIR on hard disks.
Well, not always possible, because some have same filenames with different content on floppies. That needs special corrections.  Then, floppy change problem - there are really many ways of detecting which floppy is momentally in drive. Good hard disk adapt should not ask player to change disks - so to skip those key/button click waiting. Sometimes really silly code, hard to trace and correct.
OK, let's say that solved all above mentioned problems, and game starts from hard disk, and works well. Very lucky case, and it is about max 10% of games.  But it happens that it works for some people, works not for other people.  And we are at compatibility problems:  most is with TOS version. Then HW compatibility (ST, STE, Falcon, TT ...) . And even RAM size in machine can be 'not liked' by game. Plus regional restrictions - game for Eu market may not work in Northern America, or versus.   All it needs extra work.
TOS version is hardest part, because there are games with code parts written for specific TOS version - most of it is input related - joystick code, rarer mouse code. Keyboard code may be good for only specific language version.
The solution:  doing plenty of corrections in game code, so it will work with all TOS versions ? I must say that it is almost impossible in many cases, and surely needs loooot of time, work.
Much better is to run game under specific TOS version. What ? Users need to change their TOS chips ? Of course not, TOS can be run from RAM . Yep, and that needs like 100-256 KB RAM . So, goodbye hard disk playing with 512 KB machines. Well, it was already goodbye, because in 99% cases it will not work with half MB. Because hard disk driver needs some RAM, and that's usually enough to make it not working.  So, min RAM for hard disk gaming is 1 MB. Not problem, and was not it really back in 1990 . Myself expanded RAM in my ST and other people's STs in those years.  So, we have half MB for game, some 100-200 KB for TOS in RAM. What to do with remaining ? And here comes idea of easy exit from game to Desktop, instead resetting computer (what works not always well with some games). So, saving state of low RAM (what contains TOS variables, hard disk driver etc.) and state of HW registers - in high RAM    makes possible restoring it after pressing exit key during game play. And RAM needed for it is roughly 110 KB - depends from TOS version, hard disk driver RAM usage ... and user's bad ideas - like having diverse ACC-essories, resident SW installed. No, they should be not there when gaming. Even not with 4 MB machines.
Of course some RAM is needed for code, diverse data with it - for handling all operations. And then came idea of saving game state to hard disk, so it can be played later at any time, at that pos.  It is basically same as saving and restoring TOS state at game start. Well, little harder as need to save more HW registers. That idea is not new. And of course, there are some which think that they invented hot water. I did state saves for Sinclair Spectrum around 1986, and it went on tape. Was 100x easier than with ST.

So, above was for games with regular files, and about 65% of ST games are such. The rest is with custom data, what is accessed with custom floppy access code - so not using TOS functions for that (or using XBIOS 8) .
Such need corrections in game code - redirect floppy access to hard disk access. And that can be done in diverse ways. And here need to say: I'm the one who did it in diverse ways.  Those morons, liars (about data loss with my SW + other things) who called it 'universal loading system' thought that solved it all. But where are TOS using games from their 'patch collection' ? No such. Klapauzius made some, with own special code added to ULS. But count is really low, under 50.

What I made is disassembling TOS 1.04 (UK), doing some corrections and using it from RAM.  And that was slow and complex process, starting with simpler, then more complex solutions.
First TOS 1.04 from RAM was only for single parted (so 1 file only) games using TOS calls. Not much of such ones, but it was good for start. And I made some with few files singleparted - integrated those extra files in executable. Example: Starglider 1 .
Next step was for multi file games, and that was for TOS calling games and those with own floppy code (DFC) .
In DFC case, TOS (little reduced) in RAM was only for hard disk access. When game had disk access, it was redirected to TOS in RAM, which performed file operation to specific file on hard disk (like floppy image file).
That system is pretty fast and direct. Downside is that it works only with few hard disk drivers (well, most used ones, indeed). Work in emulators need special care, but that was not main target.
And to finish this text for now:  all it (for TOS calling ones) was for only AUTO run games/SW . Because I disassembled only GEMDOS part of TOS.  What with AES/GEM using games ? Well, they can work from hard disk in much bigger percentage than games not using it - because they must be with regular files. And count of them is not big. But finally I solved it too - using complete TOS 1.04 in RAM . It still fits in 1 MB space (for 512 KB games), but users need to take care about RAM usage, and using hard disk driver with little  RAM for buffers ...
State saves work too. And here to add that that system (HAGE) works with floppy images (ST format), and it can be with pretty big size if needed - over 2 MB possible.
In short (whole story is much longer) this is how I made over 1700 game adaptations. And yes, calling them 'patch' sounds really bad. No, many of it is not patched at all. Thanx to TOS in RAM in first place - what is 'patched', a lot. But again, calling it patch is really not proper, and sounds cheap. I did not patch damaged cloth - I corrected it to serve in different environment - like correcting cloth for kitchen for usage in ironworks :-)

I did some extensions in Game start menu. Here can see YT videos about: Fromhd start page (https://atari.8bitchip.info/fromhd.php)
So, there is info about on what display it works:  C is for color, B is for B&W (monochrome). Then about control devices:  M - mouse, J - joystick, K - keyboard . Shown at top - if some is not supported there is space. After that comes short game category description - like 3D racing, RPG ...
There is now possible displaying of game screenshots and related in all 3 ST resolutions. And when clicking on game title with mouse some pic may be shown - like part of cover scan, some instructions, game description. That will close after some 5 secs, or by pressing space.
Well, this will need plenty of time to make all those picture files for over 1700 games, for some in color and B&W versions, to add mentioned info in gamelist .  I even engaged one man to help me in it, and he will be paid for.
This is how I see being useful for users, helping them, giving them something nice to see. All related with concrete games.  I must be very bad persona. Because those really 'good ones' - crackers, patchers took care mostly about own fame, so writing about 'we are the best, f* the rest' kind of messages in game starters, then argumented it with diverse fancy graphic demos before game start . and even altered some texts, screens in games (mostly to put there their nicks and like) . Then, they developed so called 'Universal Loading System'  - sure genius, something what deals only with games not using TOS calls, disk access via TOS is universal :-)) Statistic is that about 65 % of Atari ST games using TOS for disk access. And I'm one who made support for their work from hard disk/Flash cards, not stupid C.J. , who lies on forums, makes people writing complete bullshit in forums.
All I can say is: use your eyes, brain instead listening to some big names in community. There is lot of them who cares only for self, his group/crew, fame ...  Not about benefits for whole community. That's very well visible if you see picture of whole thing, and not only details - selected by those who act like some football fans. Including aggression - well online it is not some fist fight and similar but spreading blatant lies, misinformation, spitting on those who dare to say openly to assholes what they are really.   Yes, there is plenty of them, sadly more that really constructive people.

I worked a lot on updates in last 2 months. New image is almost completed. Added about 30 games, and screenshots in medium, high-res too. Then useful info for games: on what monitors it work, usable controllers, game category ...  All it needs plenty of time to update all for over 1700 games, so there will be a lot to deal with, until I guess end of this year.  Game starting system is same. Disk access is improved too, especially useful for machines with less RAM. And those who don't like flashing (fading by old disk access system).
And latest feature:  videos of gameplay playable on Atari self - STE in first place, with ST will have no sound.  I did mods on my old LAV player SW, so it works smooth with now popular adapters as SD4ST and ACSI2STM, US .  More on this page: HAGA(E) improvements (https://atari.8bitchip.info/imprhage.html)

Day at the Races https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yyzsKUOnIA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yyzsKUOnIA)
Caesar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0RdvL-j08E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0RdvL-j08E)
Viz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozSLR9JiPR8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozSLR9JiPR8)
Snacman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2b3Q96nvQA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2b3Q96nvQA)
Latest is pretty good PacMan clone, with optional STE DMA audio instead PSG one (as is on STs), more than 16 colors at once on screen. Seems for me as harder one (or I'm just still to weak). Of course, there are some cheat options.  And in YT video can see count of my hard disk adapt DIRs - 2023, in compilation.
There will be not much more adapts from me . Practically 99% of quality ST games were done already.
This is last compil. with size of 3.5 (to fit on min 4 GB Flash cards). Next will be 7 GB - what is limit of size accessible with usual TOS versions (1.04 and higher), and that will leave space for many state saves, screenshots, pictures . Not to mention that today will hardly find SD cards with lower capacity (like below 16 GB). Plus real capacity of some 8 GB card is actually close to 7 GB (always some 5-15% less) .
Feel free to write me in e-mail if interested.  petari@8bitchip.info   . Please write about your config - Atari model, TOS version, RAM size, used storage adapters ...

I'd love a copy of this 'final' 4gb image! Is it possible? You know my email, regards, Asger.

Post by: Petari on 08-09-2023, 06:45:39
Actually there will be one more 3.5 GB image in few days. Couple games more, and I work on code what will generate statistic of all titles, DIRs in GAMELIST - because there are aka names for some games, and they point to same DIR (don't see sense to add other version just because different title). Then, there are games with multiple versions, games with some enhancements (Uridium, OIDS, Dungeon Master , etc ...) .
7 GB image will not come soon - I want to add lot of new screenshots, pictures ...
And feedback can make me more motivated in that :-)

New, 7 GB image is under work, and will be ready in day-two. It is for TOS 1.04 and higher. Extra size will be useful for additional material as pictures, videos, and of course state saves.
Currently there are 2048 DIRs - I added many (less known) games in last 2 months. There will be not much more - I don't see that many quality games left. What need to work on is doing screenshots for most of games, some new videos. That needs plenty of time.  More details in e-mail.

Title: Re: New game adaptations

And few more:
Lorna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsq7RJkC-js)
Tangram (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hKVTQqOq0M) - hardest part was to find image of it
Battle Master (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjUcE-YsYmo) - yet one more with bad IKBD code. Needed some correction to start reliable. Yes, not only 'converting', changing disk code , it is about fixing some not so good code, what passes when run from floppy, and not when run from much faster storage.
Dalek Attack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfYGRkaeX_4) - this was harder case because really strange floppy code, then needed some extra measure to make intro part being not skipped .

This latest new adapts are available for now only on latest compilation. What has many improvements over downloading files one by one. Plus, I was not able to update page with game table because of health issues caused by poisoned food and drinks. E-mail me with details about your Atari ST(E) config, used mass storage adapter type, storage media. You saw it correct: number is 2070 . So much items in game list. Count of games is not same - there are multiple versions of same game - like older version of adapt, newer version. Then original game, same with some improvements. Aka game titles - pointing to same DIR, so one version. Really don't see need to deal with both versions only because different title screen (text). And there are opposite cases too: multiple games in one DIR . Like 21 simpler, shorter games.
What is real count of games ? Really hard to get correct answer, that need some time. I guess that number is right around 2000 . And it is more complicated in fact - should we count as separate game all those Tetris, Boulder Dash ... versions, remakes ?

And finally:
Utopia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdXKREs6bRg) - was pretty hard case, floppy code is strange, so needed lot of tracing and thinking about how to solve code what redirects it to hard disk/cache.
And needed some IKBD code fix too.  In any case, pretty good game.

Less known games:
Firestorm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmCXqNLLw6k) - avoid, rescue type g.
Dames Simulator (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYFb6vH_QMU) - Francais
Lucky Luke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFjnis4gysU) - French v. There is German v. too. Needed to combine good files from diverse sources to have all uncorrupted files (corruption everywhere now  :(  ) . It seems that shooting is final level ?
Sunny Shine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf5i-khAl9o) - only German v. was done. And is really hard to find. Will add ST images of this and Lucky Luke on my site soon.
Centurian (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2QEjnoE1EY) - shooting, collecting in some desert like area.
Willys Brother (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F0LvCsCu-s) - short (30 KB) game. Better play it with joystick, otherwise diagonal move (needed a lot) will be pretty hard. GFA source included - chance to improve game  :D

Rana Rama , HAGA v. with trainer options done by Jeffrey Young .
Rana Rama YT (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jffi9e4n9Dc)

Championship Manager Italia '95  2 videos:
With usual HAG2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTAHZblSjUE)
With new HAG2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wuKp3gjD38)
May see that with new HAG2 it works much faster, without fading during player transfers - because much more direct hard disk/Flash card access from game.

Is there a link where I can download this, and add it to my harddisk image? I cannot see it on the table on this website.

I prepare new updates this days. When is done will send you DL data. That will include Eaglestar and Invasion too, of course.

Excellent! Eaglestar and Invasion STAC are present and working! Thank you so much!!

Fink Angel (Eaglestar) also made two other adventure games: https://www.atarilegend.com/games/search?developer_id=1251

Playing on the couch on my big screen tv.

Sometimes you see the option 8>16 MHz on the yellow screen.

But I forgot.

Which key do you press to select between the two?

Edit. Ah found it! "M".

Yes, key M . It works only with Mega STE .

I used a MiST fpga that day, so I can easily switch to Mega STE! <3

Just wondering, is "Disciples of Steel" available for direct download anywhere? I thought it had been done but can't seem to find it.

Thanks (and thanks for continuing to support the Atari community).

I have it here so Peter did do it.  Maybe it is just on his compilation image?  Well worth it to get.  Lots of games not on the direct downloads.  From what Peter told me there's a new image coming soon with a lot of new adaptations!

Right, it is only on compilation currently. Times are hard, and putting it in DL section with all screenshots and other things needs time. While feedback is not really good. Please drop me a mail (petari@8bitchip.info), and I will explain how to get image. I'm sure that it is worth of it for real Atari ST, for long time user .

Oh, another user told me that in all versions of Disciple of Steel that he's tried (including yours), it crashes at a certain point.

I'll quote what he said below:

"The game has a problem in that it crashes when you enter the palace of Kitari"

Not sure how easy it would be to replicate this or get to that point in the game but I thought it would be best to mention it.

Thanks for any help.
