Title: Uprading my Atari STE to 2.06
Post by: Waltermixxx on 03-12-2010, 22:45:57
i used an atari based .img splitter and slit a 2.06us.img file into hi and lo.
this produced two 128K files with .hi and .lo extensions.

couple of questions,  the two files produced, can they be burned onto eproms?
and if so which eprom would be best suited and fit in the atari 1040ste 32Pin sockets?

:)  currently my ste is running 1.06 I believe...

will a 27c010 at 120 ns work?

:) i understand there may be some jumper pads that need to be soldered...

any additional info on the topic would be awesome :)

thanks folks :)

Splitting to Hi and Lo parts is exactly in purpose of burning them in EPROMs.
EPROM 27C010 (120nS) will work for sure.  Most likely no need to do any pad soldering.
If you have already EPROMs and not some custom ROM chips in your STE then for sure no need for pad soldering.

Btw. I prefer and recommend to go on switchable TOS. It means using EPROMs or even better Flash EPROMs (which are now much cheaper) with higher capacity: 2 or 4Mbits, so can fit multiple TOS versions. Then you can have TOS 2.06, 1.06, 1.62 ... in machine and simply choosing what to use. Of course it depends on your equipment - what you can programm.

the STE is currently unmoddified, so it has "stock" atari 1.06 roms.
the split files generated on the st, can these be burnded directly onto two empoms?
as is or do they need to be messed with?  I will be burning the eproms with a william eprom burner.

because the rom size is bigger than the current 1.06, are there any jumper settings that require
messing with? or is it plug and play?  the rom sockets are 32 pin, the roms currently in there,
appear to be 28 pin...

as far as multiple tos'   I think I would just like to stick with the latest rom only.
:) Any technical advice on any jumpter settings that need to be changed, or pads
that need jumpers soldered in?

cheers :)

Here:  http://dev-docs.atariforge.org/
may get a lot of Atari DOCs, including schematics.  Get STE schematic, and will find pad settings on first page.

Thank you very very much  :)

I have seen som tos2.06us.img files on the web, i run the splitter application on my STE,
take the two files, HI and LO and transfer them to my pc and burn them directly to Eproms?
I don't have to do anything to the files? just burn onto eprom, adjust jumper settings, and thats it?
I don't have to convert them or anyting?

Right. Nothing except mentioned is required. Just check that files are correct length:

IMG file must be $40000 hex or 262144 bytes. LO and HI half of that.

thanks for the reply :)

I have some 27C010's coming to me soon via Ebay, so I will give it a shot :)
cheers :)

Well my 27C010 eproms arrived, I burned the split 2.06 hi and lo files to the eproms,
and changed the jumper settings and now I have a 4 meg ste with 2.06 tos.
does the memory check on boot, and seems to be pretty cool :)

thanks for your help :)

Hi and Marry Christmas to all!
i want to buy 2 of 27c010 chips, what is better the "ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE EPROM" or UV erasable?
electrically erasable is also good? coz dont have UV erase machine..
the type (Winbond 27C010-70) is ok for STE? what speed needed? 150ns or less?

Electrically erasable is better in all aspects. It is now cheaper and no need for UV light to erase.
It is called Flash EPROM. Instead 27xxx get 29xxx . Functionally equivalent when reading.
Writing is possible with proper programming device or even in circuit - http://atari.8bitchip.info/flashest.php

I have Flash EPROMs in my STE, Mega STE and 1040 ST. + In Sinclair Spectrum. Works flawless.

Marry Xmas  :)

I've heard 120ns or better for the eproms (assuming a 27c010) i imagine that flash chips mentioned above would be faster so not an issue... the eproms I purchased happen to be 150ns, I burned them using a willem programmer as well, and they seem to work... seem to be stable at that speed... but time will tell :)  I liked the idea of going with flash chips, but i have a burner and an eraser, so just stuck to what I knew ....  :)
